The Sun Also Rises - Hernest Hemingway

Up until just a few decades ago, Pamplona was nowhere near the tourist radar and was just a tranquil city in the Pyrenees foothills. So what changed and turned this city into one known around the world? American author Ernest Hemingway took a trip and discovered the delightful hamlet and its now internationally-famous San Fermin Festival.

In fact, his first experience with the city, the people, the culture of bullfighting and the San Fermin Festival made such a lasting impression on him that he returned to the city several times and made Pamplona the principal setting for his first major novel, The Sun Also Rises.

The Sun Also Rises, a semi-autobiographical novel delving into the values and lives of the young people - known as the "lost generation" - coming of age during and following the years of World War I and the Great Depression, focuses on a group of young Americans traveling through France and Spain. The plot eventually brings them to Pamplona during the San Fermin Festival, where the novel's most climactic scenes take place.

Upon its publication, The Sun Also Rises proved wildly popular and, seemingly overnight, brought international fame to the small city of Pamplona and its characteristic festival. Since the days of Hemingway, thousands of people from around the globe have traveled to experience the Pamplona that so inspired Hemingway.
