Running of the Bulls
Running of the Bulls
While Pamplona is a tranquil city during the rest of the year, the city spends one week each July immersed in madness for the San Fermin Festival, named for Pamplona-born Christian martyr San Fermin. The festival began in 1191 to honor him, but has since been converted into a massive week long celebration that has made waves around the world.
The most famous part of the San Fermin Festival is the daily "encierro", which most folks know better as the Running of the Bulls. Thousands of people from around the globe come to watch - and some to even participate in - the mayhem, so be sure to arrive early if you want a good view!
Following the daily bull dash through Pamplona's winding medieval streets, the street partying starts back up. Enjoy parades, music, food and drink and parties that last all night. Squeeze in a couple hours of sleep and then get up and do it all again!
The San Fermin festival is without a doubt one of Spain's most famous celebrations. July makes for a wonderful time of year to come to Pamplona and learn Spanish. Not only is the weather beautiful, but you can experience one of Spain's most famous celebrations at the same time! Cultural, educational and endlessly fun, it will be an experience you'll never forget!
